I write in my journal to remember. Memory's one of those things people take for granted, I reason. If you ask someone "what's the earliest thing you remember?," the first thing they tell you isn't the true thing. It'd be better to ask them what the first significant thing was, or the most dramatic.
What's a memory exactly? I don't think I know.
I don't think, any road, that all I want to remember is the significant things.
The living room's littered with boxes. We didn't do a good job packing them - Jinx says half of them have the wrong things in them because I got distracted halfway through the process and forgot and then started packing the box for another room. Well, when I remembered to mark the box.
This flat is a temporary place. It's got to be. There aren't many windows - the bathroom doesn't have one, nor the living room. The kitchen had one overlooking the dining area but no sill. I put all of the plants on the stoop this morning and the women on both sides of us came out to ask if we were starting a jungle. I think they're twins - aye, that, or I'd not looked.
The neighborhood we're in has been bled of colour. England is greyer than France, that was what Jinx said of it. Aye, I told her, I've always liked it such. It's easier to blend in a grey city but a grey city also means clouds, and rain. A grey city is also a green city even if all the green you have is in cracks in the pavement. Nature always struggles through, after all. So do people.
